3D Scene Edition
The realism of the sensor simulation relies mainly on the information included in the synthetic environment. The scene generation is then the main stage of the complete process as both geometry and physics properties are set during this phase.
Depending of your application and your priority (high realism, real-time rendering, large data base, complex phenomena,…), OKTAL-SE provides you with dedicated interfaces that will help you to build and customize your 3D scene.
Our mission
Geometry
By creating 3D databases from 2D GIS data (Geographical Information System) and loading existing models our tools help you to define both geo-specific and geo-typical environment. Our experts can also support you in building your virtual mock-up!
Terrain building indoor objects
Modeler
The creation of 3D virtual mock-up is a key feature of the global simulation process. 3D virtual mock-up can be modeled either automatically or manually.
For automatic modeling, OKTAL-SE provides you with dedicated terrain modeling tools that convert 2D geographical data into 3D geometry and automatically associates physical attributes for EO and RF domains.
For manual modeling, OKTAL-SE also provides you with plug-ins to existing modeling tools.
Oktal-se native format
Converter
Existing 3D scenes can be easily converted in native OKTAL-SE format. This conversion concerns geometry, textures and database structure.
Physics must be added in a second stage. Most of common format conversion are available such as Open FLT, VRML…

3D Mock-Up
Every sensor simulation starts from a 3D virtual mock-up. Due to the extensive experience of OKTAL-SE in synthetic environment modelling, we are able to propose pre-defined 3D databases including all the information needed to perform multi-sensors simulation with SE-Workbench. Those databases provided in the SE-3D-DB package represent various typical and specific areas: desert, urban, country, sea and airport.
Temperature atmosphere
Environment
The radiance of a material seen by an infrared sensor highly depends on the surrounding atmosphere.
This characterization requires a wide set of data, managed through a single interface to get the relevant information for both thermal and radiative effects.
key feature of the physical rendering
Materials
Whatever the domain (EO or RF, the spectral definition of material is a key feature of the physical rendering.
OKTAL-SE proposes an efficient solution to define and assign physical materials to each element of the 3D virtual mock up.

advanced physics based rendering engine
Physics
The high realism of the OKTAL-SE simulation solution relies on an advanced physics based rendering engine. Either for EO or RF applications, our concern is to include a full physical characterization of the synthetic environment for the signal propagation calculation from the sources to the sensors.
Synthetic Environment
Starting from the 3D scene, the end user needs a unique interface to merge:
- all the 3D entities (static and dynamic ones)
- the atmospheric conditions
- the trigger of events
- the trajectories of objects and sensors
- …
The OKTAL-SE solution is an easy user interface that is designed for engineers who have to prepare and perform the rendering simulation.
core of the sensor rendering process
Scenario
The Synthetic Environment is the core of the sensor rendering process. It includes the complete description of the environment in terms of:
- Geometry
- Physical properties of materials
- Atmospheric and thermal conditions
- Mobile and instanced objects
- Special events during simulation (flares, explosion,…)
- Trajectories
- Scripted animation
- Sensor characteristics
3D Scene Rendering
High realism in infrared sensor or radar rendering, fast image generation for training simulation, high performance technics for hardware in the loop applications, … for each application we have the solution.
But OKTAL-SE solutions are not video-game ones, our solutions are physics based and has been validated in real program by MoDs and major industries.
Electro-Optics sensor simulation
EO
The Electro-Optics sensor simulation proposed by OKTAL-SE covers the complete range of wavelength from the visible domain to the Long-Wave InfraRed (LWIR) domain.
Both full hyper-spectral approach and fast image generator are included in the offer.
real-time and off-line (high fidelity) sensor rendering
Passive
Our passive EO simulation offer relies on a dual approach: real-time and off-line (high fidelity) sensor rendering. From the technical specifications definition until the qualification of the final system, our simulation tools can cover all the V-cycle of the project. This complete solution has been used and tested on major industrial programs by key players in the Defence and Aeronautic fields.
Ray-Tracing kernel
High fidelity
The full EO sensor rendering tool developed by OKTAL-SE relies on a Ray-Tracing kernel combined with a complete physical modeling. A wide range of experimental campaigns have been carried out by scientific partners and prestigious customers (French MoD, MBDA,…) to validate this reference solution.
real-time mode
Fast
Computing sensor rendering image in a real-time mode is required for a wide range of application. The strength of the OKTAL-SE solution relies on the combination of both high performance rate and compliance with fully validated EO rendering.
laser simulation
Active
The Active Domain part of our offer applies to laser simulation. It takes into account a laser source illuminating a 3D scene and a passive observing infrared camera. Our tool takes advantage of our EO and RF validated simulation software. It is possible to simulate the range gating capacities of the system.
propagation engine
Propagation
All the OKTAL-SE products related to Radio-Frequency sensors rely on the same propagation engine. The proposed method combines Geometrical Optic, Physical Optics and Physical Theory of the Diffraction to simulate the (existing) interaction between electromagnetic waves and objects in their environment. This accurate and efficient approach is well suited to assess in real time the signal received by a GPS receiver moving in a stringent environment (see GNSS offer). The same approach can be used to estimate the electromagnetic field amplitude at any location of an environment RF sources.
propagation of a GNSS signal
GNSS
The propagation of GNSS signals in constrained environments is disrupted by two intrinsic phenomena: the presence of obstacles and the interaction between the signal and the environment. The OKTAL-SE solution simulates those phenomena by calculating accurately the propagation of a GNSS signal in a 3D virtual scene in a real-time mode.
asymptotic EM kernel
EM Field
OKTAL-SE has developed with French ONERA support, an asymptotic EM kernel combining Geometrical Optics and Physical Optics for surfaces and edges, for EM high frequencies domain. This kernel has been customized for several applications such as EM cartography with multiple reception points, Electro Magnetic Compatibility and Antenna coupling.
radio-frequency simulation
RF
Thanks to our innovative methodology (awarded by the French “Science&Defense” award) of electromagnetic wave propagation coupled with high performance computing technology, OKTAL-SE solution is the universal workbench to address all the radio-frequency simulation cases.
We propose either:
- “Propagation” solutions like GNSS simulation and EM field computation
or
- Radar imagery simulation like SAR, ISAR, NBSAR, RBGM, RCS.
Simulating radar image
Radar
Simulating radar image is a real challenge as you need both to compute accurately the electromagnetic signal propagation in the 3D environment up to your receiver and to perform the signal processing done the radar. OKTAL-SE provides you with a powerful solution to realize the propagation phase and delivers you with a toolkit to process the incoming signal and compute the output image.
RCS, ISAR, RBGM and SAR
High fidelity
OKTAL-SE has developed with French ONERA labs support, an asymptotic EM kernel combining Geometrical Optics and Physical Optics for surfaces and edges, for EM high frequencies domain. This validated approach allows to address various applications such as RCS, ISAR, RBGM and SAR.
real-time RF signals within a complex 3D scene
Fast
Using the fully validated asymptotic electromagnetic developed by OKTAL-SE and French ONERA labs, taking advantage of recent improvements in the field of 3D graphics (General Purpose GPU ray tracing), provided some simplifications of algorithms, it is now possible to compute real-time RF signals within a complex 3D scene.
